Can going Vegan save you grocery money?

For many meat lovers, the thought of giving up their favorite burgers and steaks seems unimaginable. However, as the cost of groceries continues to rise, some may find themselves considering alternatives.

According to research conducted by the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, opting for a diet free from meat and dairy products could significantly lower your grocery expenses.

So not only would you contribute towards your health and environmental sustainability, but you would also be saving money in a major way.

According to scientific research, embracing a plant-based diet devoid of any animal products can lead to significant savings on your food expenses. Experts suggest that by eliminating meat, dairy, and other animal products from your diet, you could potentially reduce your food costs by up to 16 percent. On an annual basis, this could translate into impressive savings of over $500 for diligent shoppers who choose the vegan approach.

“We knew that a vegan diet significantly reduces your risk of conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity—and now we have proof that opting for beans instead of beef will also lead to significant savings on your grocery bill,” says study co-author Hana Kahleova, MD, PhD, director of clinical research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, in a media release.

The results of this study, conducted by the Physicians Committee, reveal some fascinating insights. Participants were divided into two groups: a control group and a vegan group. The individuals in the vegan cohort adhered to a low-fat vegan diet consisting of grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables. On the other hand, the control group was not allowed to modify their regular eating habits. It is worth noting that researchers did not impose any restrictions on calorie intake or food expenses for either group. These findings provide valuable evidence regarding the potential benefits of adopting a vegan diet without imposing additional limitations on participants.

A meticulous approach was taken to assess food expenses by combining individuals’ dietary records with the up-to-date food price data from the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Thrifty Food Plan for 2021. This careful methodology ensures that researchers have a holistic view of the financial aspects associated with maintaining a nourishing and balanced diet.

Vegan eaters are experiencing a noticeable decrease in their overall food expenses, reducing costs by an impressive 16 percent or $1. 51 per day. This significant shift is not observed within the control group, further emphasizing the benefits of a vegan lifestyle.

The savings can be attributed to various factors such as cutting back on meat, resulting in an average reduction of $1. 77 per day, as well as dairy products, which amount to approximately $0. 74 per day.

Moreover, the avoidance of items like eggs and added fats also contribute significantly to these reported financial savings.

While it may seem like vegans spend more on certain food items such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains, the overall savings they gain from avoiding animal products is still significant. In fact, their commitment to a vegan lifestyle ultimately leads to greater savings in the long run.

It is particularly noteworthy that researchers also observed significant improvements in weight loss, body composition, and insulin sensitivity among overweight adults following a low-fat vegan diet. These results demonstrate the potential of adopting a plant-based lifestyle for both personal well-being and economic advantages.
