MAGA or Not? Michael J. Fox’s not-so-shocking revelation about which political party Alex P. Keaton would support today

Alex P. Keaton, the fictional character portrayed by Michael J. Fox on the popular American sitcom Family Ties, remains an enduring cultural icon even decades after the show’s original airing.

The show, which graced the NBC network from 1982 to 1989, encapsulated the shifting cultural landscape of the United States during that time and served as a reflection of the transition from the cultural liberalism of the 1960s and 1970s to the conservatism that characterized the 1980s.

In the popular sitcom, we often experienced an ongoing clash of ideologies between Alex, a young and upcoming outspoken conservative Republican, and his hippie parents, Steven (Michael Gross) and Elyse Keaton (Meredith Baxter).

The President of the United States at the time, Ronald Reagan, once stated that Family Ties was his favorite television show.

Fox Did an In-Depth Interview with Variety to Promote His New Documentary, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie

In a recent interview with Variety, legendary actor Michael J. Fox discussed his highly anticipated new documentary, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, which delves into his remarkable career and personal journey. During the conversation, Fox reflected on the milestones that shaped his path to stardom. One such milestone was his iconic portrayal of the money-loving young Republican, Alex P. Keaton, on the beloved NBC sitcom that captivated audiences for seven years.

Keaton: A Character Ahead of His Time

As fans of the show can attest, Fox’s character, Alex P. Keaton, was renowned for his political clashes with his ex-hippie parents and siblings, providing comedic relief and thought-provoking moments. Despite his conservative beliefs, Alex was a complex character who challenged the status quo and offered a unique perspective on the political landscape of the time.

Alex Would Have Never Been a MAGA Republican

In that interview, Fox shared his belief that if Alex P. Keaton were still a part of our lives today, he would not have aligned himself with the current Republican administration, particularly with former President Donald Trump.

Fox stated, “He would have left [the Party]. I don’t think Alex would even see Republican and Democrat now. He’d see normal people and crazy, fascist weirdos.”

The MAGA Republicans are quite a bit different than the Republican leaders of the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.

Led by former President Donald Trump, this faction introduced a distinct brand of populism and nationalist rhetoric while not only embracing disinformation, white identity, and conspiracy theories, but condoning anti-LGBTQ sentiment, sexism, and anti-Semitism.

The MAGA movement also emphasized issues such as immigration, trade, and a perceived need to challenge establishment politics and gained significant traction in reshaping the Republican agenda.

The Republican Party has witnessed significant transformations from the conservative era of Ronald Reagan to the rise of the MAGA Republicans under Donald Trump. And the shifting priorities, policy focuses, and rhetorical styles demonstrate the dynamic nature of American politics.
